The Need for Advocacy and Awareness – What we are doing now

The National Aged and Community Care Roundtable for Forgotten Australians (National Roundtable) is committed to shedding light on the various challenges that Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers face as they age. We are actively working on an advocacy and awareness campaign to address several critical issues.

Lack of Specialised Services: Highlighting the ongoing issue of non-existent specialised services from aged and community care providers, as identified through the Specialised Verification Framework on the My Aged Care portal.

Care Finders’ Limitations: Despite the Care Finder initiative being established by the government in 2023, they are still unable to direct Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers to appropriate services as none exists

Redress Payments in Means Testing: Advocating for the exclusion of redress payments, received by those who suffered institutional childhood abuse, from being considered as assets in means testing for aged care. Precedent exists for another special needs group, Veterans, in that the Prisoner of War ex gratia payments were excluded from aged care means testing in 2014, allowing this cohort to maintain this payment for the purpose of which it was intended., The National Roundtable advocates for the one-off Redress payments to be treated in the same way, to ensure the integrity of the purpose of the payment is upheld.

The National Roundtable is focusing its efforts on compiling comprehensive desktop resources, conducting an advocacy and awareness campaign for change, and engaging with politicians and policymakers to drive these initiatives forward.
